The Spring Blossom Festival weekend,
May 24, is a long standing tradition in Brown County. From the late 1870s apple orchards filled the county as the hilly terrain offered protection against spring frosts and the climate made for a colorful, richly flavored apple. In 1929, Dale Bessire, one of the top artists of the Nashville Artists Colony and an apple grower himself, held the first blossom parade. While today the parade features redbuds and dogwoods, in 1929 it featured apple blossoms. The event lasted a week and was advertised on radio stations as far away as Chicago. This year’s parade theme is “Celebrating Our Children.”
Friday, May 2 begins with the
Brown County Lions Club Circus
which will be held at Eagle Park. The Kelly Miller Circus is one of the last big top shows. The show travels with a fleet of 25 vehicles and requires an area of some 90,000 square feet to set up on. Show times are 4:30 pm and 8:00 pm, advance tickets are $9 adults and $5 for children under 12; day of show $12 adults and $6 children under 12.
Rock Around the Clock
features live entertainment on the patio of the Visitors Center Friday, enjoy late night shopping and dining in the Village of Nashville.
Saturday starts with the annual Boy Scout auction.
The Brown County Lions Club’s Spring Blossom Parade
featuring floats, bands, community groups, antique tractors, and performers begins at 11:00 am.
Enjoy classic show cars after the parade during the
Spring Street Fair and Cruise-In.
Live music, family activities, and plenty of cars will keep you occupied throughout the afternoon. Hours of the Street Fair are 2:008:00 pm.
Over 100 Vintage antique tractors on display at the
Antique Tractor Show
May 3 and 4 at the 4-H Fairgrounds Friday and Saturday 9:00 am5:00 pm and Sunday 9:00 am3:00 pm. There is a bean and cornbread dinner, children’s pedal tractor pulls and games, arts and crafts, and a flea market. Admission is free.
On May 4 at 3:00 pm the Peaceful Valley Chamber Players will perform a concert,
Going for Baroque in Brown County,
at Nashville United Methodist Church. Guest Artists include Angelique Zuluaga singing soprano and Edmund Cord playing trumpet. Admission is free.
The Spring Blossom Arts Festival
is a new event for Brown County. For years Artists have been drawn to Brown County, known today as the “Art Colony of the Midwest.” The weekend of May 911 artists will display and sell their works throughout the Village of Nashville. Artists booths, demonstrations, a wearable art fashion show, art related recyclable activities, and live entertainment will bring color and excitement to the village. Over 50 artists are participating in the outdoor show in addition to the galleries and studios already located in the Village. Participating artists are eager to be a part of this new event, creating a new tradition for Brown County.
The Spring Blossom Arts Festival is not a traditional art show where artists’ tents are located in one main area. Tree lined streets and benches provide a great venue for a full day of art, shopping and dining. Unique elements incorporated into the Spring Blossom Arts Festival makes it unlike traditional art festivals. These include: Historic pioneer village with demonstrating hand crafters; storytellers; an Artisans Alley; Wearable Art fashion Show; recycling art activity booth; Handbell Theater; train rides; performance art and live entertainment. Wine tastings, beer garden, snack and old-fashioned candy stores will provide breaks throughout the day. Art show hours are Saturday 10:00 am6:00 pm and Sunday 10:00 am5:00 pm.
Friday night kicks off with a
“Rock Around the Clock”
live performance on the Visitors Center patio from 5:009:00 pm.
